Deltares Delft3D
Deltares' Delft3D FM Suite models water flow, transport of matter and morphology in coastal, estuarine and river environments.

Delft3D FM Suite 2D3D is a modelling suite from Deltares, a hydraulic research institute, for coastal, estuarine and river environments. It simulates water flow in two and three dimensions on a flexible mesh, including tidal drying and flooding of flats, density-driven flow from temperature and salinity differences, transport of matter, the hydrodynamic effect of works such as land reclamation, breakwaters and dikes, and the recirculation of cooling water from a power plant; Deltares offers a hydro-morphodynamics package alongside.
Deltares describes the users as consultants, engineers, contractors, regulators and government officials, and the suite as usable by non-experts through its Delta Shell graphical interface, with Python scripting for batch runs.
It runs on Windows and, for the computational core, Linux; a model needs administrator rights to install and from 1 GB of memory upwards depending on size. The latest validated release is Delft3D FM Suite 2026.01, distributed through Deltares service packages ordered by email; the page read does not state a licence or price.

Which areas will flood, how often, and what would a change to a river, a drain or a pump do about it?

Recent reports, from a creek in Kentucky to the Strait of Hormuz, each read for the question someone there would put to a model of their place, and the kind of model that would answer it.
