François Bousquet

CIRAD researcher in Montpellier who works on agent-based models of social-ecological systems and was a signatory of the 2003 charter of companion modelling.

François Bousquet, born in 1963, is a researcher at CIRAD in Montpellier who works in the complexity sciences.2 His 1994 doctoral thesis at Lyon 1 used multi-agent simulation to study fishing in the central delta of the Niger.2 By his own account he spent the next ten years on agent-based modelling as a tool for transdisciplinary research on social-ecological systems, and the ten after that on companion modelling, a method for social learning and collective action.3 He later took a master's in the sociology and anthropology of intercultural relations, and he co-founded the Agropolis forum-theatre troupe in Montpellier.2,3

He is a co-author of the papers that describe Cormas, CIRAD's agent-based platform for representing the relations between societies and their environment, which is free under the MIT licence.4 He co-edited the proceedings of the third international workshop on multi-agent-based simulation, MABS 2002 (Springer, 2003).2

He is one of the twelve signatories of the 2003 charter of companion modelling. The charter traces the approach to a 1999 chapter by Bousquet, Olivier Barreteau and colleagues on multi-agent simulation in environmental modelling.1
